The route
The highway west to Hassan
You leave Bengaluru through Nelamangala on NH 48 and branch off onto NH 75, the Bengaluru–Mangaluru highway, which runs past Kunigal and Channarayapatna to Hassan. Depending on your start point, the route-planner path also uses NH 73 and SH 71.
| Road distance | About 190 km one way |
| Driving time (route planner) | About 2 h 30 min without traffic delays or stops |
| Main roads on the route | NH 73, SH 71, NH 48, NH 75 |
| Round trip | About 385 km of driving, plus any local sightseeing |
Measured from central Bengaluru (Vidhana Soudha) using OpenStreetMap route data. Your exact distance depends on the pickup point and the route the driver takes, and real journey times are usually longer once city traffic, ghat sections and breaks are added.
Those are route-planner numbers without traffic or stops. Much of NH 75 is a wide, divided road and the drive is generally easy, with roadside eateries along the way. Hassan is in Karnataka, so there is no interstate permit; tolls are charged extra.
Places to visit
Hoysala art and Jain heritage around Hassan
- Belur: the Chennakeshava Temple, built by the Hoysalas and still in worship, famous for its star-shaped plan and the graceful bracket figures of dancers on its pillars.
- Halebidu: the old Hoysala capital, where the twin-shrined Hoysaleswara Temple is covered in friezes of elephants, epics and gods. Belur and Halebidu are part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing of the Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas.
- Shravanabelagola: the great monolithic statue of Gommateshwara (Bahubali) on Vindhyagiri hill, one of the most important Jain pilgrimage sites in India. Reaching the statue means climbing a long flight of rock-cut steps.
- Gorur Dam on the Hemavathi river, a short drive from town.
- Hassan town itself, a handy base with hotels and restaurants for exploring the district.
Plan your trip
Day trip, overnight or onward journey
The full round trip is about 385 km. Reaching Hassan and returning in one day is possible with a very early start, but if you want to see Belur, Halebidu and Shravanabelagola properly, plan an overnight stay. A relaxed two-day plan is Shravanabelagola on the way in, Belur and Halebidu the next day, then the drive home.
Hassan also opens the door to the hills of the Western Ghats. You can add Sakleshpur for coffee estates and misty ghat views, extend the trip to Chikmagalur, or carry on towards Coorg. Temple sites are busier on weekends and holidays, so a weekday visit is calmer.
