Bangalore to Hampi Cab
Hampi, the old capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, is one of the most rewarding road trips you can make from Bengaluru. A cab from Bangalore to Hampi takes you door to door and lets you move between the scattered ruins at your own pace.
The route
How to reach Hampi from Bangalore by road
The drive heads north-west out of the city on NH 48, the Tumakuru road, and continues through the dry plateau country of central Karnataka. Route planners join it up with NH 50, NH 75 and SH 49 depending on the line they pick, and the final stretch runs to Hosapete, the town closest to Hampi.
| Road distance | About 340 km one way |
| Driving time (route planner) | About 4 h 15 min without traffic delays or stops |
| Main roads on the route | NH 48, NH 50, NH 75, SH 49 |
| Round trip | About 675 km of driving, plus any local sightseeing |
Measured from central Bengaluru (Vidhana Soudha) using OpenStreetMap route data. Your exact distance depends on the pickup point and the route the driver takes, and real journey times are usually longer once city traffic, ghat sections and breaks are added.
These are route-planner figures of about 340 km one way and about 4 h 15 min of driving without traffic or stops. In practice, with city traffic at the start and a couple of breaks, it is a full travel day. Chitradurga, with its large hill fort, sits on NH 48 and makes a natural halfway stop for breakfast or a short look around.
The whole trip stays inside Karnataka, so there is no interstate permit. Tolls and parking are paid extra.
Things to see
What to see once you reach Hampi
Hampi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its monuments are spread over a wide area of boulder hills, banana fields and riverbank. Some places most visitors include:
- Virupaksha Temple, still in worship, with the old Hampi Bazaar street running out in front of it.
- Vittala Temple, known for its stone chariot and finely carved mandapas.
- The Royal Enclosure, the Lotus Mahal and the Elephant Stables in the royal centre.
- Hemakuta Hill and Matanga Hill, popular for views over the ruins at sunrise or sunset.
- The Tungabhadra river, with its rocky banks and the round coracle boats Hampi is known for.
Distances between the temple groups are long enough that a car with a driver saves a lot of walking in the heat. Your driver can drop you at one group and pick you up at the next.
Plan your trip
Two days, a longer stay or a one-way drop
Because of the distance, a same-day return is not practical. Most people plan at least two days: drive up on day one and see the royal centre in the evening, then spend the next day at Vittala and the riverside before heading back. Three days gives you time for the quieter corners and for Hosapete and the Tungabhadra Dam area.
Round trips are billed on actual kilometres with a minimum of 300 km per day, plus the driver allowance shown in the rate table. If you are travelling on to another town, or taking a train or bus back, a one-way taxi to Hampi may suit you better.
Hampi pairs well with nearby north Karnataka routes such as Bellary and Hubli, so ask us about a multi-stop itinerary.
