Virajpet is the main town of south Kodagu, surrounded by coffee, pepper and cardamom estates. It is about 245 km from Bengaluru, and a taxi with driver spares you the winding hill roads.

The route

The drive from Bangalore to Virajpet

Anyone checking the bangalore to virajpet distance will find that it is shorter than the climb to Madikeri suggests, although the last stretch is slow. The route planner uses NH 275, SH 90 and NH 275K, passing near Mysuru before turning into Kodagu.

Road distanceAbout 245 km one way
Driving time (route planner)About 3 h 30 min without traffic delays or stops
Main roads on the routeNH 275, SH 90, NH 275K
Round tripAbout 485 km of driving, plus any local sightseeing

Measured from central Bengaluru (Vidhana Soudha) using OpenStreetMap route data. Your exact distance depends on the pickup point and the route the driver takes, and real journey times are usually longer once city traffic, ghat sections and breaks are added.

These are route-planner driving times without traffic or stops. In the monsoon, mist and heavy rain can slow the Coorg roads considerably.

Things to see

What to see near Virajpet

  • Coffee and spice estates, which cover the hills around the town.
  • Iruppu Falls, a forest waterfall in the Brahmagiri hills of south Kodagu, popular after the rains.
  • Nalknad Palace, a historic Kodava royal retreat near Kakkabe.

Plan your trip

Overnight stay or a long day

The distance is short enough for a very early start, but most visitors stay at least one night to enjoy the estates and falls without rushing. You can combine Virajpet with Coorg, or break the journey at Mysuru on the way. Wildlife fans can look at Kabini as a separate trip.

Round trips are billed on actual kilometres with a minimum of 300 km per day, plus the driver allowance. Tolls, parking and any hill-area charges are extra. This trip is within Karnataka, so no interstate permit is needed.

Booking notes

Vehicles for hill roads

Coorg roads are narrow with frequent bends, so a driver used to hills makes a real difference. A sedan suits two or three travellers, an Innova Crysta or Hycross suits a family with bags, and a Tempo Traveller works for a group staying at the same estate. For a one-direction drop, see our one-way taxi page.
