Bangalore to Talakadu: Distance and Cab
Talakadu is the Cauvery village known for temples that were once buried under drifting sand. Here are the road figures from Bengaluru and a plan for making it a smooth one day trip by private cab.
The route
Distance and drive to Talakadu
Most of the journey is on NH 275, the Bengaluru–Mysuru highway, before you turn off onto SH 33 for the last section towards the river. The whole trip is inside Karnataka, so no interstate permit is needed.
| Road distance | About 130 km one way |
| Driving time (route planner) | About 2 h without traffic delays or stops |
| Main roads on the route | NH 275, SH 33 |
| Round trip | About 265 km of driving, plus any local sightseeing |
Measured from central Bengaluru (Vidhana Soudha) using OpenStreetMap route data. Your exact distance depends on the pickup point and the route the driver takes, and real journey times are usually longer once city traffic, ghat sections and breaks are added.
Route planners calculate these figures from central Bengaluru, without traffic or stops. The state-highway portion is narrower than the expressway-style highway, so plan your timings with a margin and avoid arriving after dark.
Things to see
The sand temples of Talakadu
Talakadu sits in a bend of the Cauvery, where sand has drifted over the landscape for centuries. Several old temples here were once buried by it and have since been excavated.
- Vaidyeshwara Temple and Pathaleshwara Temple, among the main Shiva shrines of the village.
- Maraleshwara, Arkeshwara and Mallikarjuna temples, which together with the first two form the group of five Shiva temples known as the Panchalinga.
- Keerthinarayana Temple, a Hoysala-period Vishnu temple.
- The wide, white river-sand banks, which look more like a desert beach than a typical riverside.
A popular legend links the place to a curse on the old rulers, which is why locals still tell the story of the sands. The Panchalinga darshan festival is held at long intervals, so check local information for any such event rather than relying on a date.
Plan your trip
Making a one day trip work
If you are searching for a one day trip from Bangalore to Talakadu, the plan is straightforward: leave early, break once on the highway, spend the middle of the day among the temples, and drive back in the afternoon. At about 130 km each way, the day is full but achievable. Many travellers prefer to add a night in Mysuru.
The river bank has little shade, so carry water and a hat. Because round trips are billed with a minimum of 300 km per day and the Talakadu round trip is just under that figure, a longer itinerary uses your booking fully. Good additions include Mysuru, the waterfalls at Shivanasamudra or the Cauvery island of Srirangapatna.
Families with elderly members should choose an Innova or Crysta, and a bigger group a Tempo Traveller. Other short trips are listed in our guide to day trips.
