Alappuzha, also called Alleppey, is the heart of Kerala’s backwaters. A private cab with a driver takes you there from Bengaluru in comfort and keeps you mobile once you arrive.

Measured from central Bengaluru (Vidhana Soudha) using OpenStreetMap route data. Your exact distance depends on the pickup point and the route the driver takes, and real journey times are usually longer once city traffic, ghat sections and breaks are added.
The figures show route-planner driving times without traffic or stops. Plan on rest breaks and a slower pace once you reach Kerala’s busy coastal roads. If you leave Bengaluru early in the morning, you can usually reach the backwaters by evening and enjoy a relaxed first night.
Things to see
Backwater country
- Vembanad Lake, the large backwater lake that stretches along the coast.
- Houseboats, the traditional kettuvallam boats used for cruises through canals and lagoons. Book them separately with an operator.
- Alappuzha Beach, with its old pier and a walkway for evening strolls.
- Kuttanad, the paddy-growing region below sea level, known as Kerala’s rice bowl.
- Punnamada Lake, the venue for the Nehru Trophy snake boat race.
Alappuzha is nicknamed the Venice of the East for its canals.
A day here is usually slow by design. Many travellers spend the morning on the water, take lunch at a local Kerala restaurant, and walk by the beach in the evening. Fish dishes and appam with stew are common things to try, and the region is also known for coir products made from coconut husk.
Plan your trip
How long to stay
At this distance, plan a minimum of three days, with one night near the backwaters. Houseboat check-in times depend on the operator, so confirm them in advance so the cab can drop you at the jetty.
Many people combine the trip with Kochi or Munnar, and some continue south to Varkala. For a shorter Kerala option, see Wayanad.
Vehicles
Which cab suits you
Kerala roads can be narrow and busy near towns, which is one more reason to let the driver handle parking and turns while you rest. A sedan is right for couples. For families with luggage, an Innova gives space for a long road trip, and groups can ask about a Tempo Traveller.
