What to expect at Adiyogi
Adiyogi means “the first yogi”, and the figure represents Shiva as the source of yoga in the yogic tradition. The bust at Chikkaballapur follows the design of the well-known Adiyogi at the Isha Yoga Centre near Coimbatore, and stands in open grounds against the rocky hills of the area.
- Most visitors spend their time walking around the grounds, sitting quietly in front of the statue and taking photographs.
- Early morning and late afternoon light suits the statue well, and the hills around it look their finest then.
- Weekends and Shivaratri bring much bigger crowds than weekdays, so expect slower traffic and busier parking at those times.
Programmes and visiting arrangements at the centre can change, so check current details with Isha before you go.
Plan your trip
A same-day trip, with stops on the way
With about 130 km for the round trip, this is a comfortable same-day outing. Many people combine it with other places in the area:
- Nandi Hills, the old hill fort and viewpoint in the same district, popular at sunrise.
- The Bhoga Nandeeshwara Temple at the foot of Nandi Hills, a beautifully carved old temple complex.
- Devanahalli, with its old fort and its link to Tipu Sultan, who was born there.
Round trips are billed on actual kilometres with a minimum of 300 km per day, plus the driver allowance, so a single-day Adiyogi trip is billed at the 300 km minimum. Rates are in the table on this page.
