Outstation route

Bangalore to Chitradurga Cab

Chitradurga is known across Karnataka for its vast stone fort that climbs over rocky hills. A private cab makes it easy to start early from Bengaluru, walk the fort at your own pace and return the same day, or stay on for an overnight halt.

The route

Driving from Bangalore to Chitradurga

The drive follows NH 48 out of Bengaluru and then joins NH 75 and SH 48 towards Chitradurga, passing through dry, open country that suits an easy highway cruise.

Things to see

The fort and what surrounds it

  • Chitradurga Fort, often called the stone fort, with several lines of walls winding over granite hills.
  • Onake Obavva Kindi, the narrow gap in the wall tied to the legend of the woman Obavva.
  • Hidimbeshwara Temple inside the fort grounds.
  • Chandravalli, an archaeological site near the town with ancient remains.

Wear sturdy footwear. The fort involves a good amount of walking over uneven stone.

Plan your trip

Day trip or overnight

With a drive of about 2 h 45 min, a day visit is possible if you leave Bangalore very early. Bear in mind that the fort deserves unhurried exploration, so many travellers choose an overnight halt to avoid driving back at night.

Chitradurga also lies on the way to the north of the state. If you are travelling further, see our pages for Hampi and Hubli, or read the one day trips from Bangalore guide for ideas.

For a family of four or five, an Innova gives space for everyone. School and college groups usually prefer a Tempo Traveller.

Before you travel

Tips for the fort climb

The fort area is exposed and can be hot, so carry water, a cap and sunscreen, and begin walking early. There is plenty of loose stone and uneven steps, which may be tiring for young children and elderly visitors.

Opening arrangements and entry rules are set locally, so check them on arrival. If you decide to extend the trip, our round trip cab page explains how extra days are billed.
