Outstation route
Bangalore to Munnar Cab
Munnar is Kerala’s best-known hill station, a landscape of tea estates, misty peaks and cool air high in the Western Ghats. A Bangalore to Munnar cab gives you one vehicle and one driver for the whole holiday, from your front door to the viewpoints and back.
The route
How the drive to Munnar unfolds
This is a long road trip in two very different halves. The first part is fast highway: you leave Bengaluru on NH 44 through Hosur into Tamil Nadu, and route planners then use state roads such as SH 17 and SH 87 further south. The last part climbs into the hills on winding ghat roads with hairpin bends, where speeds drop and the scenery takes over.
| Road distance | About 435 km one way |
| Driving time (route planner) | About 7 h without traffic delays or stops |
| Main roads on the route | NH 544H, SH 17, NH 44, SH 87 |
| Round trip | About 865 km of driving, plus any local sightseeing |
Measured from central Bengaluru (Vidhana Soudha) using OpenStreetMap route data. Your exact distance depends on the pickup point and the route the driver takes, and real journey times are usually longer once city traffic, ghat sections and breaks are added.
Route planners give about 435 km one way and about 7 h of driving without traffic or stops; the round trip is about 865 km. Add meal halts, a few photo stops and slower going on the hill section, and the real travel day is considerably longer.
The route passes through Tamil Nadu into Kerala, so interstate permit charges and tolls are extra, as is parking at viewpoints and parks.
Things to see
What Munnar is known for
- Tea estates – the Kanan Devan Hills are covered in neatly clipped tea bushes, and simply driving between them is one of the joys of a Munnar trip. A tea museum in the area explains how the leaf is processed.
- Eravikulam National Park – grassland and shola forest that is home to the Nilgiri tahr, a mountain goat found only in the Western Ghats. Anamudi, the highest peak in South India, rises beside the park.
- Mattupetty Dam and Echo Point – a reservoir set among hills and tea gardens, popular for boating and the walk along the water.
- Top Station – a viewpoint near the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border with wide views over the valleys when the clouds clear.
- Neelakurinji – the hills around Munnar are famous for this shrub, which blooms in mass only about once every twelve years and turns the slopes blue-purple.
Entry arrangements for the national park and boating can change by season, so check current details locally.
Plan your trip
Plan a multi-day Munnar trip with rest breaks
Munnar is not a weekend dash from Bengaluru. Plan at least three days, and four if you can: one day to drive there, one or two days in the hills, and one day to drive back. Break the drive with proper rest stops every couple of hours for meals and stretching, and aim to finish the hill climb in daylight, because ghat roads are easier and more pleasant with good visibility. Your driver also needs his rest each night, so travel days are planned for daytime.
If anyone in your group gets car-sick, have a light meal before the climb and keep the windows open on the bends. During the monsoon the hills receive heavy rain and roads can be affected, so check conditions before you leave.
Munnar combines well with Kochi for the backwaters and Fort Kochi, or you can compare it with other Western Ghats hill stations such as Kodaikanal and Ooty.
Round trips are billed on actual kilometres with a minimum of 300 km per day, plus the driver allowance. One-way drops to Munnar are also available, with the fare confirmed at booking; see our one-way taxi page.
Which car
Choosing a car for the hills
A Dzire, Etios or Ciaz is fine for two to four people with moderate luggage. For families, the higher seating and extra space of an Innova Crysta or Innova Hycross make the long hours and the bends more comfortable. College friends, office teams and big family groups can travel together in a Tempo Traveller.
